When time travel was banned, the ban operated more like a fine: its illegality was little more than a bargain for the rich to make among themselves. The official stance of most countries was that there were certain states of emergency where its use might be deemed applicable. According to the United Nations, time travel had been used four times since its inception at the turn of the century. The Universal Protocol deemed the details of the four incidents classified, with the only concrete detail known being that time travel was approved in each instance by recommendation of the World Health Organisation.
Like most people, Ardelia Paves knew that this admission to only four incidents of time travel use was bullshit. Since the turn of the century, cases of what they now called Juvenile Dementia had skyrocketed. People young and old were wandering around with memories no-one else had, asking after people who had never lived, asking directions to towns no map had ever carried. Even the movies, her nan said, were not the ones she remembered.
Of all the missing memories and inexplicable adjustments braided through her life, it was this sentiment from her nan, tossed lazily into a sweaty Saturday afternoon two weeks ago in the kitchen, that echoed in Ardeliaâs head.
âAll them old movies,â Nan had tutted, ânever had any Blackfellas in âem, and if they did it wasnât pretty â or it was paint,â she added, darkly.
